Taliban Trains Monkeys To Fight American Soldiers?

The US-led forces fighting the Taliban fighters in Afghanistan might soon encounter 'gun-totting' monkeys, trained for 'jihad', if a rumour doing the rounds in the Chinese media is to be believed.

According to most reports - this is simply a rumor that began on the Internet and has since gained some steam.

NATO officials and military experts have scoffed at the report originating in the Chinese media, which says that the Taliban are training monkeys to fight the US-led military. The New York Post cited the state-run People's Daily as saying that the Taliban is "training monkeys to use weapons to attack American troops".

The Rumor Doctor had to investigate this case of primal fear after the Chinese People’s Daily reported this week that “monkey terrorists” are being trained by the Taliban in Waziristan, near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The newspaper also claimed that reporters from an unnamed British news agency took photographs of the “monkey soldiers” holding AK-47s and other weapons.The primates are supposedly meant to counter U.S. military technological advantages in Afghanistan.

“In response, the Taliban forces have tried any possible means and figured out a method to train monkeys as ‘replacement killers’ against American troops,” according to the newspaper. The Rumor Doctor asked NATO officials whether these killer monkeys have yet been encountered on the battlefield in Afghanistan.

“We have absolutely nothing that leads us to believe that this tale could be even remotely based in reality,” said NATO spokesman Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale.

Lorcaserin,Wonder Diet Drug Is Safe,  Study Finds

An experimental weight loss drug that targets the brain’s hunger center was shown to be safe and effective for helping dieters shed pounds in a two-year study, researchers say.

The drug lorcaserin works on the serotonin receptor -- the same appetite-controlling hormone targeted by the notorious drug fenfluramine, the "fen" component of combination medication fen-phen. Fenfluramine was taken off the market in 1997 after being linked to potentially life-threatening heart valve problems.

But lorcaserin is far more selective than the drug fenfluramine and much safer, its manufacturer says, because it specifically targets the serotonin receptor associated with hunger while having no impact on the heart.
Half Lost 5% of Body Weight

Half of the dieters in the study lost at least 5% of their body weight, compared to 20% of dieters who took a placebo pill. About one in five lorcaserin users lost 10% or more of their body weight, compared to one out of 14 placebo users.

People who continued on the drug for two years were able to maintain their weight loss better than those switched to placebo after one year, researcher Steven R. Smith, MD, of the Florida Hospital and the Sanford-Burnham Institute tells WebMD.

The study appears in the July 15 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

By the end of year one, 55% of the patients in the placebo group and 45% of those taking the diet drug had dropped out of the study.

During the second year, half of the remaining participants who had been taking lorcaserin were switched to placebo.

The average weight loss during the first year was about 12 pounds in the lorcaserin group and 5 pounds in the placebo group. During the second year of the study, 68% of people who continued to take the weight loss drug maintained the loss vs. 50% of people switched to placebo.

Ryan Reynolds debuts 'Green Lantern' costume

Ryan Reynolds is set to star as the Green Lantern and his alter-ego Hal Jordan in a movie by the same name that is set for release on June 17, 2011 and a sequel is already in the works as well.

One scene in the film involves him being hurled through the air at 60 feet per second to create the illusion of flight, according to Entertainment Weekly, which features the 34-year-old Canadian actor in his superhero costume on its latest cover.

The Green Lantern also stars Blake Lively, who plays Serena on the hit CW series Gossip Girl, as Jordan's love interest Carol Ferris as well as Peter Sarsgaard, who plays his enemy Hector Hammond. The director is Martin Campbell, who directed the 2010 Mel Gibson film Edge of Darkness, the James Bond movie Casino Royale in 2006 and the 1998 film The Mask of Zorro and its 2003 sequel.

Michael Goldenberg, Brothers & Sisters writer and producer Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim penned the screenplay for The Green Lantern, while the latter three have also been tapped to write The Green Lantern 2, which is in development and has not been given a release date.

Reynolds recently suffered a minor injury while training for the film off its sets and has since been back to work and production was not affected, Entertainment Weekly said. Reynolds was cast as the Green Lantern last year after beating out Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto, who went through two rounds of screen tests, according to Us Weekly magazine.

Reynolds played Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, in the film X-Men Origins: Wolverine alongside Hugh Jackman in 2009 and the title character in the 2002 comedy film Van Wilder, which starred Tara Reid. He also starred in the sitcom Two Guys and a Girl from 1998 to 2001.

The actor, who married actress Scarlet Johansson in Canada in 2008, began his career on Canadian television, starring in shows such as the teen soap opera Hillside, also called Fifteen, in 1990 and the sci-fi teen series The Odyssey.

    Aimee Louise Sword, 36, entered a guilty plea to one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in exchange for the dismissal of two other sex offenses that involved her son. Before sentencing by Oakland Circuit Judge Daniel P. O'Brien, Sword -- who has five other children -- apologized for her actions.

    "I want to apologize to the court, my children and my sister," Sword told O'Brien. "I am remorseful for everything that occurred. ... I don't understand it."

    Assistant Prosecutor Nicki Weisberger described Sword as committing a "selfish, cowardly, despicable act" with the boy, now 16. At a preliminary exam in January, the teenager testified she contacted him in 2008 while he was living with an adoptive family in Grand Rapids. Sex acts later occurred at a motel and at the home of one of Sword's relatives in Waterford Township.

    Defense attorney Mitchell Ribitwer noted Sword entered a guilty plea to spare the teenager from having to testify at trial. Ribitwer said Sword utilized the Facebook website to contact the boy.- Detroit

A disclosure form filed by Palin's political action committee SarahPAC reveals the ex-Alaska governor has raised a serious stash of funds, donating at least $87,500 to fellow Republicans whose candidacies she has endorsed over the last few months.

"We're going to really help a lot of Republican candidates get a chance to win," Tim Crawford, the committee's treasurer, told Politico.com. "And I'm glad we have the resources there for the governor to use."

Palin's contributions are being interpreted as evidence that she is building a network of Republican supporters who will return the favor when she decides to run for President.

"In politics, donations – especially donations made as a vote nears – are favors that can produce return favors, with interest, in years to come," the Christian Science Monitor reports.

And Politico reports that the filing "suggests that she has begun building a more sophisticated political operation. SarahPAC raised $866,000 in the second quarter of this year and boasted more than $1 million at the time of the filing.- NYDAILYNEWS

As for the $100 million figure, TMZ said it was not speculation but “comes from sources with direct knowledge of the property settlement agreement.”

Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone is in hospital after intervening in a domestic dispute, according to the band.

Nathan Leone, the band’s singer and Matthew’s brother, said that the bassist was left unconscious after trying to stop a man beating his wife in the street.

“A few nights ago, Matthew walked from my apartment a block and a half down the street to meet a friend for a drink. Half way there he saw a man severely beating his wife. Being the most amazing, strong, heroic and incredible person I know … even though the guy was twice his size, Matthew intervened. He managed to subdue this guy for a second and, since his wife was beat up, called the cops … as he did so the guy jumped him from behind and beat him. This guy did things I can’t even type.”
